Reminders

Week of Dec. 12-16

Dismissal Monday ~ Thursday is at 11:40.

Friday is our Christmas Breakfast in the lunchroom. Dismissal will be at 10:30. If the breakfast ends before 10:30, you are free to take your child at that time.

We will be cleaning out binders and  desks, as well as checking supplies this week. Be on the lookout for a list of supplies that needs to be replenished.

Grades posted to Edline will be updated on Friday afternoons. The update will include any papers sent home in Friday Folders. Work completed on Friday will be posted the next Friday.

Return to school Jan. 4, 2012

Regarding homework: As stated at the beginning of the year, students had two excused times to miss homework during the 1st and 2nd quarters. Beginning with the 3rd quarter in January, they will have only one excused miss for each subject area before receiving a zero.

Parents,
     It's been a busy week! We have had several graded assignments yesterday and today. We also had several Christmas art projects. Our plan was to get all of them graded and sent home today, but there isn't enough time. We decided to hold signed paper folders until Monday. They will be ready Monday. IF your child is leaving after Kids Yule Love and not staying until 11:45, he/she will need to come up to the room and get his/her folder so that it can be signed and returned on Tuesday, December 13.

December Details

The Elementary Christmas Program is Monday, December 5 at 7:00. This program is presented by 4th-6th grade students.  Boys need to have a Santa hat. All students should wear Christmas colors, but no jeans. Students will be sitting on stage so skirts are not recommended either. Please be aware that it gets hot on the stage, so keep that in mind when choosing the clothing to wear. Please drop off your student at the lunchroom at 6:30. If your child has on an outer jacket or sweater, be sure to keep it with you. He/she should already have been to the restroom by that time. THANKS!

The Magician's Nephew is complete! We hope your child has enjoyed this story. All students will take an AR test over it next week during their library time.  Students may want to reread the story between now and then.  Please be sure your child continues bringing the book to school until Wednesday for some follow-up activities. After Wednesday, the book can stay home.

On Thursday, Dec. 8, we will give a quiz over the second set of regions/states. These are the Southwest region, the Southeast region, and the Northeast region. Study materials are in their homework folders.

We will have Spelling next week, but we will use Christmas words. Students are bringing home their homework folders today with the list of words and the verse we will memorize, as well as information about the Spelling test on Friday, Dec. 9. 

On Friday, Dec. 8, we will have a Math test over material from Chapter 6. Like all our math tests, there will be review of other chapters also on the test.  Not included on this test (from Chapter 6) is Lesson 4, "Problem Solving Strategy: Work Backwards." We will cover that lesson after Christmas holidays. The test alert is in your child's Friday Folder.

Also in Friday folders you will find flyers with information about several service projects. Please participate as you are able.

 Our annual Kids Yule Love program will begin at 8:20 on Monday, Dec. 12, in the Athletic Complex. Students are asked to bring at least one unwrapped gift. Please join us if you can!

Finally, you should have received information from Sign-Up Genius about our Christmas breakfast on Friday, Dec. 16th. If you did not, please contact Amy McAlpin, Kenya Owens, or Beverly Finney. 

Geography Bee

Yesterday we held the grade-level Geography Bee. We had several students that tied so we had our tie-breaker round this morning. The school wide Geography Bee will be held in January. The 4th grade will be represented by Casey Richardson and Tanner Scott!! Congratulations! We are super-proud of you!

Students are to be at school at the regular time for Grandparents' Day.  They are to be dressed in red, white, and blue for our patriotic theme. The schedule for the morning is as follows:

Reading News

Originally, the plan was to start The Magician's Nephew next Monday. However, I really want to make sure we can take our time and enjoy the story, as well as finish the story before Thanksgiving holidays.  We will be reading in class and underlining characters, settings, and confusing words/phrases.  Students may reread what we've read in class, but for now, do not read ahead. We will have some question sheets for grades and students will also take the AR test on the book when we've finished the story.

In Spelling we are on Lesson 8. The Unit test for Lessons 5-8 will be the week of November 12th-16th. Be on the look out for a Test Alert.

Dear Lower School Families,

     The Lower School will be celebrating Fall with our annual Pumpkin parties again this year. On Monday, October 31st, all students (and faculty of course) in grades PK-6th will be allowed to dress for school as their favorite character/book character for our 1st annual character parade! This will be an excellent time to wear your character costumes if you have one or to dress up as your favorite book character, etc. This is NOT a "dress down day". Everyone will need to be either in costume or in school uniform. We will begin our celebration with a character costume parade through the middle and upper school and around the athletic complex at 1:00 pm and immediately return to class to begin our parties. Of course....parents are invited to surround the gym...cameras in hand... for excellent photo opportunities!

We have a few pictures from the Field Trip yesterday that we will be posting later. If you have pictures you would like to add to our album, please email them to your homeroom teacher.

The money for our next Field Trip is due Monday.  Look in Signed Paper folders for a letter letting you know if you owe money for your child's admission. If you are planning to go as a chaperone, that money is also due on Monday.

Report Cards will come home on Monday. These DO NOT have to be signed and/or returned to us. Please keep them at home.

Our next Math Test will be on October 18th. It will cover Chapter 2, as well as a review of other skills we have had this year. 
 
Tomorrow at 2:00 in the PE gym, the elementary school will have their very own PEP RALLY! The children may wear their jerseys, cheer leading uniforms, and TSA spirit shirts! What a great time we'll have cheering on our elementary football players and cheerleaders! 


Fall Break!! There is NO SCHOOL for students on Monday and Tuesday next week, October 10th and 11th. Enjoy your days off from school.
 
Don't forget our field trip on Thursday, Oct. 13th to see the show about Laura Ingalls Wilder at the Grand Opera House. We will have lunch at a fast food restaurant and then head to the Museum of Arts and Sciences. Please remember that your child will need lunch money that day. SPECIAL NOTE: You will receive a notice in Friday Folders about a Dress Down Day next Thursday. Students are welcome to make a donation to this important fund raiser, but they must be in uniform dress that day since we are going on a field trip.

FYI...

On Tuesday morning, each student will color a "Hootie, the Wise Old Owl" coloring sheet. We will send this home tomorrow because there is a place on the bottom for parents to fill out and sign. All returned coloring sheets will be entered in the Path2College 529 Plan's Coloring Sweepstakes. If you would like your child's picture entered, please return them, signed, on Wednesday morning. All entries must be postmarked by Friday, September 30, so we will mail them Thursday morning. The winner will be selected in random drawing on or around October 13. The winner will be given a $1,529 scholarship fund to use when it's time for that student to go to college.


There will have a cub scout "round up" informational meeting on: Wednesday, September 28th for grades 1st-5th. The cub master will be stopping by our classrooms for around 10 minutes beginning at 9:00am. The sign-ups for Cub Scouts will be held in the cafeteria on Thursday, September 29th at 6:30.

~Student Council is again sponsoring Hats for Hope. Students who make a $1 donation may wear a hat to school on Friday, September 30. All money will go to Jay’s Hope Foundation and will be donated in honor of eighth grade student Abby Wilson to show our support of her in her battle with cancer.

~Art Class
Ms. Jones has asked that students bring a large t-shirt to be worn during art class. Please be sure that it is long enough to cover their sleeves and shirts completely.

SPELLING UNIT 1 TEST

Tomorrow, Friday, September 23, we will have our first Unit Test over the words in Lessons 1-4.  There are three sections on the test. For each section, words from each lesson will be used. In the first section, I will call out 12 words for the students to write correctly. In the second section, students are given sets of 4 words and 4 sentences. They have to choose which word completes the sentence best.  In the last section, a word will be spelled three different ways and the student circles which spelling is correct. Not all of the words from the lessons are included on the Unit Test.

A few updates...
     BOTH classes reached their goal of 60 magazines sold. We have planned their party for Wednesday afternoon. Go, 4th Grade!
     We are also very close to filling our Compliment Gumball Machine. What an awesome group of students :)

A few reminders...
     If your child's birthday is this month and you would like for him/her to be presented with a birthday book, please have the form and check in by Wednesday. Birthdays are recognized at Celebration chapel on the last chapel of the month.
     Please let your student clean out his/her own homework folder once a week. Your child knows which papers we are through with and which ones they are to bring back for class or study. A few times this year,  parents have cleaned out their child's folder, not realizing that they were throwing out needed papers.

The magazine sale has been extended to Wednesday, September 14th. 

We have almost reached our school goal.Trojan Legion needs our support. They do ssssooooo much for the school. And don't forget the added bonus of a holiday in October!!! :)

Congratulations to Mrs. Ford's class for reaching their class goal of 60 magazines. They will have a special movie party as a reward!

Mrs. Crumbley's class is VERY close to reaching their goal of 60. It won't take many more to get a party for her class also.

Reminder: Since we are beginning to have occasional cool mornings, more jackets and sweaters are showing up. Please be sure that all coats and sweaters have names in them.

Next week is HOMECOMING. Here are some things you will want to know:
**All students must adhere to Friday’s “Spirit Day” dress code during Homecoming Week. Additionally, students may wear hats (within the daily theme) and flip flops during Homecoming Week. Students not participating in dress up days must be in uniform. If your child wears flip flops on Tues., Thurs, or Friday, please send tennis shoes for PE.

A few reminders:
Please be sure that you let us know the week before your child's birthday if you plan to send a special snack. Our days are packed full of teaching, learning, and Exploratory classes. We want to be able to schedule a special time for the birthday treat and some days work better than others due to our schedule. Also, please send napkins and plates for the treat if needed. We have limited supplies of these items in our rooms.

Remember that school starts at 8:10. The children should be unpacked and ready to begin work at that time. We change classes immediately following homeroom.

In Signed Paper folders, coming home today, there are several items for you to look over on the left-hand side. Be sure to sign the papers on the right and have your child return them on Monday. One of the grades included is the Reading Test for "The Gardener." If your child turned in his/her Summer Reading, bonus points have been added to this test.

If your child is absent, please make plans to get his/her work that day if possible. We also need a note explaining the absence.

We've had a super first week of school. We have taken some pictures, but the computer is not cooperating with our attempts to post them on the blog. We will keep working on this!

Thank you to all of you who have sent in needed classroom items requested at Orientation. They will be put to good use this year!

A few reminders:

     ~ Boys shirts should be tucked in throughout the school day and they should have on a belt if the pants have belt loops.

     ~ The magazine sale began yesterday. Post card booklets may be turned in up to next Wednesday, August 24th.The first turn-in day is also Wednesday. The other turn-in dates are Wednesday, August 31st and September 7th. Let's all work together and reach the goal!!

     ~ The art fee is $20.00 this year. Please send this in as soon as possible in an envelope with your child's name on it.

It's been a good Monday here in 4th Grade, and that is a great way to start our first full week of school.

Please continue working to make sure that books and workbooks are covered by Friday, August 19th.

Our email is still hit and miss. If you email us and don't receive a response, we may not have received it. You may still call the school, 477-6760, and Mrs. Cheek or Mrs. Joyner will relay any messages you have.

We have had a super first two days of school. We are enjoying the children and look forward to a great year!

~ Carpool tags should be attached to the front visor or held up for us to see. These really help us to learn to identify you and your car from a distance. Thanks for your help with this.

~We worked on covering hardback books today. Unfortunately some of the book covers would not fit. If your child has any books that we were not able to cover today, we will send one or two books home each night to be covered.

Workbooks will need to be covered with clear contact paper. We are sending them home today. Please cover them this weekend if possible. Books and workbooks must be at school each day, so be sure they are sent back daily. Please have them all covered by Friday, August 19.

~All students need to have a chair bag. All of our books, workbooks, and other supplies will not fit in the desk. Please be sure your child has a bag by Monday.

~Students may have a water bottle if they would like one. Please send one with a sport top or some other top that will prevent spills. We will also have a time set aside each day for an afternoon snack. Your child may bring something that is quick and easy. Please do not send anything that will spoil if left overnight in the trash. Thanks!

~If you send lunch money for your child’s account in the lunchroom, please be sure it is in a labeled envelope or baggie. If part of the money is for a sibling in another class, the envelope should be labeled with the children’s names, the homeroom teacher’s name, and the amount that goes into each account.

Stone Fox

There has been some confusion about a required Summer Reading book for 4th grade. Some of you didn't know there was one ~ Yikes!! All 4th grade students were to read Stone Fox this summer. We will begin classwork related to the book on Monday. If your child hasn't read the book, I have school copies that he/she may borrow and read over the weekend. It isn't a long book and it should be easy to read in 3 days. Please let me know if your child needs a copy.

News for you . . .

Don't forget to return your re-enrollment contracts by Friday, April 8th. Contracts returned after this date will not qualify for the reduced re-enrollment fee of $50 per child. After April 8th, the re-enrollment fee will be $150 per child.

Yearbook order forms are due April 15.  You can get a form from Mrs. Cheek's office or download it here.

In conjunction with the mission trip to Orphanage Emmanuel in Guaimaca, Honduras this summer, Tattnall will be conducting a food drive for Orphanage Emmanuel from April 5th - 15th. Gallon cans of fruits or vegetables, large bags of plain flour, dried beans, pasta, rice, and sugar are a few items that are extremely beneficial to this orphanage. We hope that you will consider donating to this wonderful cause.

Report Cards for the 3rd quarter are in Friday Folders. Any paper dated after March 11th is a 4th quarter grade. Report cards do not have to be signed and returned.


Remember we will begin ITBS testing on Monday. Please be sure your child gets a good night's sleep, a good breakfast, and is here on time next week. We begin testing first thing each day! Thanks for your help with this.

Georgia Aquarium Field Trip

• Parents~We need to get tickets ordered for the Aquarium Field trip. Please be sure to return the form with your child by Friday, March 11. Thank you!
• We hope you have made plans to be at TSA Thursday evening for the Spring Social. You will love the 4th grade's auction project! It's will be quite a memento. The list of other items offered for the silent auction is a wonderful collection as well. You don't want to miss this time of fun and fellowship with your school. Just a couple of notes . . .

• Everyone is really enjoying this wonderful spring-like weather!! Please remember that deodorant is our friend in 4th grade. We told the students Friday that if they would like to keep some deodorant in their backpacks to reapply after PE, that would be fine with us. We do ask that it be unscented or lightly scented. Thank you for your help with this!

• Both classes reached $50 in Kosater Cash last week! We have planned a candy/board game reward for the afternoon of Friday, February 25. Candy will be taken care of by Mr. Kosater, but we are asking the students to bring games on Friday morning that they would like to share and play with their friends. These may be board games, card games, or other games, but please no electronic hand-held games (dsi, i-pods, etc.)

What's Coming Up?

Red Cross Week begins tomorrow, Jan. 31 and runs until Friday, Feb. 4. All money collected will be used at school to provide first aid supplies for the classrooms.
Grandparents' Day is this Friday, February 4. The program begins in Trojan Hall at 1:00 P.M. Grandparents are welcome to visit the classroom after the program.
Sunday, February 6 is our second Open House for prospective families. Spread the good word about TSA and invite families that are looking for a great place for their children to come and check us out!
The Movie Camera Book Report is due Wednesday, February 9. Your students may bring them in as soon as they are ready.

Friday Folders

Friday Folders are being sent home today. There are no graded papers in the folders. However, report cards are in the folders, so be on the look out for it. You may keep the report card, but be sure to return the folder on Monday.

• Parent information form for our next trade book, Mr. Popper's Penguins. Sign and return this form. Your child will also have a list of vocabulary words from the book with definitions.  This is an aid for reading comprehension; your child will not be tested on the vocabulary.  

• Book Report Packet for our next book report, due on February 9.  All that your child will need to complete this book report project are basic school supplies (crayons or colored pencils, scissors, glue and clear cellophane tape.) Your child may use Mr. Popper's Penguins for this book report if the last book report was not from the fiction genre.
