News and Reminders
Our Thanksgiving Feast was a huge success! Thanks so much to the Room Moms who planned and set up for this event. All the food the parents sent was wonderful and we were stuffed! Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Wow! What an outpouring of LOVE! We had a wonderful response to Operation Christmas Child boxes. The children especially enjoyed seeing the Chick-fil-A cows do a little "gangam style" dancing. Be sure to look on tattnall.org for pictures.
In your child's backpack today, you will find 2 forms. One is concerning the Art Fair on December 6 before the Christmas Musical. You may not know yet if you will attend the musical or not, but the Art Fair starts right after school. If you do not RSVP, your child's work will not be on display. To RSVP, please mark, "I will attend," sign it, and have your child return it on Monday after Thanksgiving.
The second form concerns Kids Yule Love. This is Tattnall's 25th year to support Kids Yule Love. The Trojan Spirit Shop is selling t-shirts to commemorate this landmark, with all proceeds going to Kids Yule Love. If you would like one of these shirts, please complete the form, attach your check, and return it to school with your child by Wednesday, November 28.
The Christmas Musical will be on Thursday, December 6. Students in grades 1-3 will be performing. Between 3:00 and the beginning of the musical, you may go to the Art Fair or to the Usborne Books display in the Media Center. Both are great places to pick up Christmas gifts!!

Open House Incentives :)
Open House season is upon us, and we need your support. While advertising plays a large part in recruiting prospective families to TSA, you, our current families, are by far our most effective means of promotion. You can provide a first-hand experience for a new family and make the difference in whether that family inquires and eventually attends Tattnall Square Academy.
This year we are offering a few incentives to our Tattnall family members for help to promote TSA and our Open House dates. When guests arrive for open house, they sign in. Alongside their name will be a column for them to identify the name of the person from TSA who made personal contact with that family and extended the invitation.

The Magician's Nephew
Big news in Reading today! We are putting away our reading book for a few weeks because we are beginning The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis. This book is part of the Chronicles of Narnia series and chronologically, it is first. Many of the curious things about Narnia, for instance, a lamp post in the forest, are explained in this book. A few other things to know...
- Each student will have his/her own copy of the book. The cost of the book was included in the Elementary Fee at the beginning of the year.
- Students will be writing and making notes in their books using colored pencils. Most of this we will do in class.
- This is their textbook and must be brought to school daily. It would be good for students to reread what was read in class each day, but please do not read ahead! We are making important predictions using textual clues about what we think will happen and it's hard to predict when you know what is going to happen.
- Students will be writing brief summaries for most of the chapters (4-5 sentences) which will be modeled in class.
- After every 3 or 4 chapters, students will have a question sheet to complete for a grade. It will count as a daily grade, and I will let them know ahead of time when those are coming up in class.

4th Grade Notes and Reminders
We have had a super first two weeks of school and wanted to take the opportunity to let you know how much we are enjoying your children! They are a thoughtful and attentive group of students.
~ Carpool tags should be attached to the front visor or held up for us to see. This will help us to move the line more quickly. When the tag is flat on the dash, it is difficult for us to see it from a distance. Thanks for your help with this.
~If you know ahead of time that your child will be leaving early, send a note with your child that morning (or the day before). Please do not have your child deliver the message verbally. Children often forget what time they are being picked up, and we want to be sure and have them ready to go when you get here.
~In your child's signed papers each week, there is a grade slip for Science and Social Studies grades. However, there may not be grades listed every week. These subjects have 2 types of grades. One type of graded assignment is kept in the binder for students to use later for studying. The grades for these assignments are written on the grade slip with signed papers so that parents know there is a grade in the binder. The other type of grade is review material, for instance, map skills, or question sheets related to a Scholastic News discussed in class. The grades for these assignments are included in the stapled papers sent home in your child's signed paper folder.
~All reading and spelling assignments/grades are Mrs. Ford's responsibility. All math grades/assignments are Mrs. Crumbley's responsibility. Your child's homeroom teacher may not be able to answer a question regarding assignments in the other teacher's area of responsibility. Please contact that teacher directly by email.
~Remember that Wednesday, August 29th, is the first turn-in day for Fall’s Fabulous Fundraiser. We have already seen students working hard and getting orders from teachers! Keep up the good work and let’s make this sale a BIG success.
~Thank you to these wonderful moms who have volunteered to be Grade Moms this year: Anya Bloodworth, Lynn Dugger, Cristy Hiller and Jan Tedders. They will be in contact with you as the need arises.
~Edline is up and running. Your user name and password are the same as last year. Check with Paula Douthit (paula.douthit@tattnall.org ) in the Registrar’s Office if you have any questions. We will post new grades on Friday before we leave.
~Parent Conference Day is scheduled for October 17. However, we are more than willing to meet with you earlier if you would like. Please contact us by email and we will set something up.

Summertime!
Hopefully, you aren't already hearing, "I'm bored!" However, if you are, there were a few websites/apps for students recommended by Instructor magazine that look good. Most are free, with the option of upgrades/more options for a fee:). Some are interesting, child-friendly information spots. Some are writing sites where students make their own stories. Some are just fun games to practice skills.
Here they are:
littlewritebrain.com
edupup.com
storylineonline.net
itsamadlibsworld.com
nationalgeographic.com/kids
scholastic.com/storia
nasa.gov
universalsports.com
tipitap.com
The edupup.com site is especially good; it covers all subject areas with great games.

Jump Rope for Heart Update...
The Elementary School raised $5871.11 for the American Heart Association at our Jump Rope for Heart event. As an incentive to raise donations, students who raised $25 or more got to "Stick it to Mrs. Mallett" today in the lunchroom for all to see! Here is a picture of her HANGING OUT! She was a fabulous sport! Thanks to Mrs. Mallett and all those who helped make this year's Jump Rope for Heart such a success!Friday, April 13, 2012
April Events
We finished the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory group projects today and they look fantastic!! It was a great week of cooperation, creativity, and compromise to produce great projects.
On Monday, we will start back with Wordly Wise, beginning with Lesson 17. Due to the Aquarium trip on Friday, we will have the spelling test over the words and verse on Thursday, April 19.
Tuesday, March 20, 2012
This Friday and next Friday, March 23 and 30, we will have picnic lunches. Students should bring a lunch, a drink, and a towel with them to school on those mornings.
Just for your information, next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Mrs. Ford will be on the 6th grade trip with her son. If you have something that needs immediate attention, please email Mrs. Crumbley.
Mrs. Moncrief would like fourth graders to make terrariums next week. Students need to bring in an empty, clean, 2-liter bottle with cap, and the label removed by next Tuesday. Write your child's name near the bottom of the bottle with a Sharpie.
We still have many students that have not turned in the permission slip portion of the Jump Rope for Heart information packet that went home a couple of weeks ago. Your child does not have to turn in money to participate; however, he/she must turn in a permission slip in order to participate in the afternoon activities on the track.
