News and Reminders

Math ~ Chapter 5 TEST on Tuesday, October 30.

Field Trip ~ Our first field trip is scheduled for Thursday, November 29. We will leave the school at 9:30 and return by 12:30. We will be going to the Museum of Arts and Sciences. Students and attending parents will need a sack lunch and drink. Field trip permission slips are in your child's Signed Paper folder. Please complete the front and back and return in by Wednesday, October 31. The sooner we have all the permission forms, the sooner we can finalize travel arrangements and get that information turned in to the front office.

Reading ~
We have finished the first 5 chapters of The Magician's Nephew and the children really seem to be enjoying it. They are busy trying to figure out the connections to parts of the Chronicles of Narnia that they know. Now that we have a good understanding of most of the main characters, we will move a little more quickly and do some reading at home. I hope to cover chapters 6-9 next week. Question sheet over chapters 4-6 on Tuesday.

Edline ~ We hope you are regularly checking your child's grades using Edline.  Here is a pretty quick way to get to the grades:
  • Login with your username and password
  • In the column on the left, click "My Content"
  • Click "Private Reports"
  • In the pull down menu, select your child's name
  • Click on "view" to see the grades so far this quarter

You will notice in the top left corner of each subject a quarterly average and a yearly average. If you have any questions, please let us know or contact Paula Douthit in the front office at paula.douthit@tattnall.org

The Magician's Nephew

Big news in Reading today! We are putting away our reading book for a few weeks because we are beginning The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis.  This book is part of the Chronicles of Narnia series and chronologically, it is first. Many of the curious things about Narnia, for instance, a lamp post in the forest, are explained in this book. A few other things to know...
  • Each student will have his/her own copy of the book. The cost of the book was included in the Elementary Fee at the beginning of the year.
  • Students will be writing and making notes in their books using colored pencils. Most of this we will do in class.
  • This is their textbook and must be brought to school daily. It would be good for students to reread what was read in class each day, but please do not read ahead! We are making important predictions using textual clues about what we think will happen and it's hard to predict when you know what is going to happen.
  • Students will be writing brief summaries for most of the chapters (4-5 sentences) which will be modeled in class.
  • After every 3 or 4 chapters, students will have a question sheet to complete for a grade. It will count as a daily grade, and I will let them know ahead of time when those are coming up in class.
I hope you get a chance to read along with your son or daughter. The Magician's Nephew is such a wonderful book!
